Ballaarat Mechanics Institute restoration

In 2021, Grimwade Conservation Services partnered with the Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute in regional Victoria to preserve valuable items from their Heritage Collection. Priority was given to restoring the three-volume Ferdinand von Mueller Collection of botanical specimens, a set of rare books and a torn 19th-Century oil painting.

The von Mueller Collection, consisting of 220 dried and mounted Australian plant specimens was gifted to the Ballaarat Mechanics Institute in 1873 (vol.1) 1875 (vol.2), and 1876 (vol.3). The collection was restored by carefully supporting the sheets on archival board and repairing tears with Japanese kozo paper and starch paste.

The restoration of the painting “Bonneted Girl with Dog” was overseen by Caroline Fry. During the restoration process, dirt and discolored varnish were carefully removed, revealing the vibrant colors of the original artwork. Furthermore, hidden details and delicate tones in the fabric and skin were uncovered. The restoration team also addressed stiff patches and adhesive on the back, repaired multiple tears, and filled in any holes to prepare the canvas for lining onto new fabric. The frame was repaired and regilded to match the original finish, bringing the painting and its fresh gold frame back together.

The Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute Project was supported by the Victorian Government through the Living Heritage Grants Program. The collection is on display at the Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute in Ballarat, Australia.
